Install Gutters

Install Gutters

Gutters play a vital role in the exterior of your home. They collect water runoff from the roof and disperse it appropriately, protecting both the foundation and structure. Gutter problems can arise if they are not installed properly.

Gutter installation is a project most homeowners can do themselves. Create a slope line along the fascia of your home to ensure that gutters will work properly.

Assess Your Needs

Gutter systems are intended to channel water away from roofs and, if installed correctly, can increase your home's lifespan. Consider your priorities before starting your gutter project. Find out how much work you can reasonably do on your own.

Your gutters should slope away to the side of your house in order to reduce standing moisture and corrosion. To create the correct slope, you must adjust and secure each section of gutter. Gutter sections need to be sloped at about one inch per 20 feet.

To get an idea of how your gutters are going to slope, drive a half-inch nail. On each end of a gutter, place a nail 1/2-in. below the fascia boards. Stretch a chalkline and align the level with it between the nails to check the slope. The slope should be slightly sloping downhill to ensure optimal drainage. Avoid aligning the gutter sections to the roof shingles. This will prevent the natural flow over them.

Select Your Gutters

Gutters can be installed by anyone, but they should have a ladder at hand and a keen eye. Many hardware stores and home centers sell guttering parts. It's important to remember that gutters don't just serve as a decorative accessory; they also protect the house from rain damage.

The pitch of the gutters, or slope, is also crucial. A steeper pitch moves water away, improving drainage and reducing flooding and overflow.

To set the slope correctly, drive in a 1/2-in. Below the shingles at one end of gutter run. Stretch a piece of string between the nail head and the fascia board. Use a bubble-level to check the slope. The string must be angled toward the high side. Outlet fittings come pre-installed in gutters up to 10 feet long. However, if you are using shorter sections of gutter you will need the outlet fitting.

Create the Slope

The slope allows water to flow freely away from your house. It is vital to ensure that your gutters are properly pitched to avoid structural damage to your home and to ensure your property's safety.

The best method to determine the correct angle of your gutters, is to measure the pitch between the end of gutter run and the downspout. It is recommended to use a line level attached to string. Attach the string to your fascia board, ideally close to where you plan on installing gutters. Be sure to place the nail that you will use to mark your spot in a convenient and safe location.

Use the chalk line as a guide once you've marked your point. Repeat the process around your entire roofline. The gutters must be slightly angled so that water can flow downhill. They should not be at a severe angle, however, as this will make your home look crooked.

Install Gutters

Gutter systems direct roof water away from the home via open-topped gutters which connect to closed pipes, called downspouts. The water is then carried to ground level. This simple system works well and is easy to install. However, it does require careful planning and attention. Most large home centres sell the gutter parts needed to create a complete system.

Before assembling gutter sections, apply a bead-like amount of seam sealant to the inside edges. This will prevent leaks and make the joints waterproof. Then screw each gutter to the fascia with long screws. If you're using gutter sections kits, follow the directions to attach each piece. Assemble the downspouts. You can also cut gutters yourself from aluminum or stainless steel. Just make sure you choose a durable material that won't rust over time. To reduce the risk that water will be forced through the seam at the end of a gutter, you can fold the section inwards so that the interior faces downward.
